"John Woo was one of the most successful directors in the Hong Kong film industry, which ranks behind those of India and the United States as the third largest in the world. He left Hong Kong to settle in Los Angeles in 1992, hoping, on the basis of his very strong critical and professional reputation, to make the transition to directing Hollywood films. Woo has been surprisingly successful, given the xenophobia and racism of Hollywood, and has made several films including two box-office hits, Broken Arrow (1996) and Face/Off (1997). Woo still directs the action films for which he had become famous in Hong Kong. But the gangster films of his great period from A Better Tomorrow (1986) through Hard Boiled (1992) were very different from the American films.
