"This study will argue that there is, in Japanese religious tradition, specifically in the approaches of Shinto and Zen, an ethical basis to advocate preservation of the environment even if it denies property owners the right to develop their land.


Although Zen would never argue that an individual cannot be enlightened if he is engaged in the world of business, land development, etc., it is nevertheless clear that such worldly enterprises are not of the highest priority for the Zen Buddhist in Japan. Where there is a conflict between the preservation of the natural environment and the development of land for the private purposes of the owner of that land, the Zen Buddhist would clearly favor preservation of the environment. As we read in Sources of Japanese Tradition, with respect to the tales told to illustrate the essence of Zen..."
