This paper discusses shifts in the left and right accompanying developments in post-WWII Japan, through to postindustrial problems of other Western countries. It also explores the American-Japanese relationship after 1945. The paper also includes information on Japan's two Restorations from late 19th century, in Meiji reform, then the fascist regime that took hold in late 20s and early 30s.

"Sabu Kohso and Asada Akira discuss Japanese politics on the left and right, through different transitions of high growth in the 1960s and early 1970s, the economic boom of the 1980s, and then the 1990s recession. Both essays are helpful in seeing a rather divided Japanese society. This is in contrast with much that tends to be believed of a post-1945 society that, from the outside, can appear uniform.
