From a historical perspective, this paper briefly analyzes the role that East Asia played in WWI and WWII. It evaluates how international politics had an impact on Japan's contribution and involvement in the wars. It then examines how this affected the Japanese society.
From the Paper:
"From a historical perspective, East Asia played an important role in WWI and WWII as both a battleground and a political catalyst. International politics and the foreign policies of regional powers had a profound impact on East Asia, and its behavior during the World Wars. Asia has always been a place of great interest to Western powers wishing to flex their imperialist muscles. East Asia's wealth of resources and manpower made it an appealing region to explore and exploit. Interference by Western powers in Asian politics left China, the largest, most populous Asian country, weakened and incapable of effective self government. China, therefore, was unable to balance Japan as it grew into a regional hegemon, taking over Taiwan and Korea by 1910. The effects of colonialism and imperialism on Asia are still felt in the 21st century."
