During this time rice culture was imported to Japan, and with the rise of agriculture came social classes and the unification of the many communities under large landowners. Chinese sources suggest that a queen named Himiko ruled the Yamato region during this time. By the kofun era - named after the kofun or tombs of the political rulers - Japan was unified under the Yamato Emperor."
