"Intersectionality refers to multiple oppressions which intersect and are interdependent upon each other to maintain a system of hierarchy based on difference. More specifically, intersectionality refers to "the intersections of race, class, and gender" (Kolmar & Bartkowski 49). Intersectionality is the "most important theoretical contribution that women's studies, in conjunction with related fields, has made so far" (McCall 1771). The significance of intersectionality is that it permits an approach for understanding systems of domination and oppression. Gender as a single analytical category has severe limitations. Therefore, feminists have focused on intersectionality since it refers to the "relationships among multiple dimensions and modalities of social relations and subject formations - as itself a central category of analysis" (McCall 1771)."
