↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses that ethics are fundamental to interaction with people in general and that they play an important role in all aspects of life, including business, education, and family life and particularly when interacting with the disabled. The paper then comments that most Western nations, adhering to the paradigm of human rights, also aim to extend these rights to the disabled and as such, ethics in interacting with the disabled also extends to communication. This is particularly so in communicating with the hearing impaired, who are often in need of an interpreter to interact with the hearing. The paper discusses how and why many countries and associations have codes of ethics for interaction with the hearing disabled.

From the Paper:

"Professionalism also relates to impartiality, in that the interpreter is to deliver the highest possible quality of service to all clients, regardless of race, nationality, gender, religious, age, disability, or any other factor. Furthermore, the interpreter should deliver each interpretation with the suitable level of sensitivity and accuracy by using the language most readily understood by all involved. As such, an interpreter is to conduct him- or herself in a manner that is appropriate for all interpreting situations (Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, 2005). An important element of such conduct is that a professional should not use any mind-altering substances before performing his or her duties".
