Internship and Retention
A brief discussion on how to provide job satisfaction to interns so they will stay for a successful career.
858 words (approx. 3.4 pages) | 5 sources | MLA | 2009 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses how the retention of interns may be difficult if the employee who devoted time and effort to the workplace feels that he or she did not receive the education desired and was merely treated like a glorified administrative assistant. The paper asserts that the intern must feel as if he or she would enjoy working at the office every day during the internship and training experience. The paper further relates that poor retention leads to tremendous losses of talent and ideas, and notes that wooing back high-potential people is a savings in terms of training, but training must be a part of every employee's experience at the company.

From the Paper:

"Interns in every place of employment are often the object of frequent jokes, the allegation being that they merely 'get coffee' rather than engage in substantive, meaningful work. The usual agreement between an intern and a company is that an intern, usually someone who is young, almost always inexperienced, and invariably hungry to gain further knowledge of a particular field of employment agrees to work for little or no pay in exchange for improving their resume and getting experience in their field of choice. The subsequent two-year development program is a transitional phase between the training period and permanent employment."
