"The Domain Name System, or DNS, is probably the most important piece of technology related to the Internet as we know it. Without it, no one could send or receive email, visit websites, download files or do any of the things we think of when we are using the Internet without having to remember vast quantities of up to 12 digit numbers. It is important to understand the function of the DNS, its history and impact on the Internet in the past and present. To understand what the DNS is and does, one must understand that the Internet is really just a series of interconnected and communicating computers and other pieces of hardware. Each of these pieces of hardware has a four-part number associated with it, called an IP address."
