This paper explains that long-term observations and studies of criminal behavior have indicated that recidivism rates can be considerably reduced by utilizing prisons as educational correctional facilities instead of punishing centers. The author points out that several studies have shown that obtaining a GED or a degree during incarceration period has a positive outcome in terms of increasing the employment prospects and promoting pro social behavioral adaptations. The paper stresses that there is little doubt as to the positive transforming influence of completing educational programs offered in the prisons.

Conclusion

From the Paper:

"Another survey conducted by researchers Dennis and Charles compared the recidivism rates for inmates who completed their post secondary degrees while in prison with other inmates who did not undergo any such educational training. The researchers included the data from the prisons of Alabama, Maryland, New York and Texas in their study and the individual results for these states were reported. Alabama had an average recidivism rate of 35% for the general prison population while it was reduced to 1% for those who completed their post secondary degrees. Similarly a study of a total of 19,014 inmates who were released from the Maryland prison revealed that 46% were reincarcerated within 3 years while there was no such incidence for the 120 persons who obtained their degrees during their prison term."
