"According to Robert Ardrey (1976), the hunting hypothesis indicates that "man is man, and not a chimpanzee, because for millions of evolving years we killed for a living" (p. 10). The hunting hypothesis contends that human beings are unique from other species in terms of both competitiveness and cooperation. This uniqueness stems from prehistoric times, when man first learned to hunt down other animals and eat their meat. Ardrey notes that early hominids did not exclusively eat meat; nevertheless, meat formed an important part of their diet. As a result, the rituals and techniques involved in hunting for meat became an important part of daily life.
