"Function of the Lumber Spine


The role of the spine in movement is one of yin and yang. The need for motility has to be continuously counterbalanced by resistance to movement in order to maintain stability (2:21). This is especially true of the cervical and lumbar regions where most spinal movement takes place. Muscles, ligaments, bones, and joints function in an intricate balance with one another to produce and resist motion.


The neutral position, assumed in normal upright posture, basically involves the maintenance of lordosis of the spine (the anterior concavity characteristic of bipedalism). The sacrum is tilted at a mean angle of about 50 to 53 degrees to the horizontal (1:45). This angle is reduced by 6 to 29 degrees for the L5 vertebra by the wedge shape of the L5-S1 vertebral disk..."
