Homeless in America

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses how, despite the enormous amounts of money spent over the last 20 years, the numbers of homeless in America only seem to be increased. It examines how, based on these amounts of money, it would seem that affordable housing could have been built and paid for each and every homeless person in America, and the problem would then be solved. Through a literature review, it analyzes why the problem persists, as well as the underlying factors that continue to create the condition of homelessness for so many American citizens.

"In his analysis, James A. Forte says that social workers can provide an effective leadership role in harnessing the generosity and compassion which Americans have demonstrated time and again. Forte says that during the Depression and World War II, social workers should once again assume leadership roles in promoting civic engagement by communicating the benefits and attractions of these types of services to the American people. As a result of the recent attacks on the United States, there has been an enormous public response to the victims of terrorism (a billion dollars was raised in less than a month). People in the United States are clearly generous when they view their fellow citizens as being victims rather than as derelicts or bums, and the vast majority of the homeless people in America have been the victims of a number of economic and social factors which have been beyond their control."
