"Missionaries and teachers of religious faiths have existed throughout history as individuals that spread religious beliefs outside of the immediate realm of their communities. Missionaries have been evident, therefore, in almost every faith, as religious groups have sought to teach others about their forms of worship. Yet, individuals such as Thomas Groome (1982) have contended that many modern teaching attempts in relation to religion neglect to include the learner in the process of discussing faith, and that a "shared praxis" in which religious discussion is a communication between the educator and learner leads to universal understanding among individuals of all faiths.
