From the Paper:

"Hawaii today is the farthest west state in the Union. It is also the most unusual state in the United States, for it consists of 132 islands and atolls extended across some 1,600 miles of ocean. Chosen as a "Paper of the Week":

Paper of the Week
January 1st is an important date globally because it marks the first day of the New Year. In the US, however, January 1st also marks another very important date: On January 1st, 1883 President Abraham Lincoln signed the final draft of the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that all slaves living in Confederate states be freed. It is because this is such an important date in US history that we chose a paper discussing the Emancipation Proclamation as this week's paper of the week. Paper #116182, "The Emancipation Proclamation: A Political Statement" provides an important discourse on Lincoln's decision to go ahead with the Emancipation Proclamation despite widespread opposition to the idea. The paper offers keen insight into the motivation behind Lincoln's decision and elucidates his political reasons for doing so.
