"Hand washing is the very fundamental and most important means for preventing and controlling the transmission of infections. Hand washing refers to "a vigorous, brief rubbing together of all surfaces of the hands lathered in soap, followed by a rinsing under a stream of water" (Ross-Kerr & Wood, 2001, p. 852). The objective of hand washing is to remove transient organisms from the hands and also to have a decreased microbial count. Among the reasons for specific times when hand washing should be used are the possibility of the patient being infected, the type of contact with a patient or some contaminated object, and the type of procedure that is done (Ross-Kerr & Wood, 2001)."
