" The purpose of this paper is to Analyze the "To be or not to be" soliloquy in Act III, Scene I of Shakespeare's Hamlet. It will consider the language and structure in the passage, and will also discuss the role of the passage in its scene and in the play as a whole.
In the content of the overall play, Hamlet's famous Soliloquy occurs at a time when he is confused and concerned over various circumstances in his life. His father has recently died and his uncle Claudius has recently married his mother. Hamlet is quite disturbed over these unexpected events, and is particularly concerned that his mother remarried so quickly. Adding to Hamlet's distress is the fact that his father's ghost has appeared to him and informed him that his untimely death was caused by poisoning on the part of Claudius.
