"Art by its very nature is meant to be innovative, expressive and limitless in its capacities. Art should never be dictated by rules or be subject to conformity. Yet in late 19th century Europe, this is exactly what was happening. The mindset that art must fulfill specific requirements outlined by the cultural elite was recognized by many artists as an insupportable situation in dire need of change. Thus in 1897, a faction of painters, architects and designers in Vienna broke away from the official Vienna Academy of Fine Arts to organize their own, more avant-garde, exhibitions. This factioning was led by Austrian Artist Gustav Klimt, who is today considered the "Father" of the Austrian Secession Movement. "
