"Supplemental Security Income SSI is an income assistance program administered by the federal government. SSI provides cash payments on a bimonthly basis to low income, aged or older blind and disabled persons. Disabled or blind children can also receive SSI. Cash payments are provided to ensure recipients receive the necessities of life including food, clothing and shelter. Although the basic SSI amount is the same nationwide, states may add money to the basic benefit.
