This paper illustrates the diversity of global urban experience and examines variations in levels of urbanization and rates of change in that level over the period 1975-2000 amongst different countries and world regions and particularly among developed and developing nations. It also examines the relationships between urbanization, level of national economic development and social conditions and the inconsistencies in these relationships within different countries and regions.
