The paper discusses how these four philosophers, who became so prominent and influential up to the present time, are basically concerned with where, how and why human beings are situated in the world. The paper points out that whereas Schopenhauer primarily was concerned with how the world was determined, Hegel developed a teleological view of history which Marx later used as the basis for his materialist dialectic. The paper shows how Nietzsche was influenced by Schopenhauer, so that all four thinkers contributed to one another.

"During the latter part of the 19th century, a number of philosophers and philosophical systems emerged that produced a major impact, one of which is still current. The philosophical movements in 19th century Germany were, to a great extent, progressive. Hegel, for example, achieved the position of highest philosophical prominence and his writings influenced the left-wing group of thinkers at the time, including Marx and Engels. Hegel and Schopenhauer became involved in open opposition and Schopenhauer's philosophy very significantly influenced Nietzsche."
