1,560 words (approx. 6.2 pages) | 4 sources | MLA | 2005 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper explains that the existence of free will implies that man has an intellectual capacity to deduce by reasoning the consequence of his actions; therefore, humans have the choice to do something other than what he or she did. The author points out that Immanuel Kant argued that, since man has an intellectual aspect, which is the ability to build a logical set of ideas based on facts that are known to be true, it is also man's moral responsibility to promote that which is good. The paper relates that many modern religions define faith as the absolute acceptance of doctrine, whether or not it can be proven, which implies that it is possible to choose not to believe if one is not satisfied with the proof of the doctrine: Only free will explains this line of reasoning.

From the Paper:

"Although Darwin's theory of evolution may lead to acceptance of the ultimate powerlessness of man to make his own decisions, the existence of free will allows a person either to believe in his theory or not. In any case, belief is an act of the intellect, which is not subject to outside forces or processes. The fact that man can refuse to believe can choose to believe or can even be in doubt as to whether or not he does believe, further implies a freedom of will."
