Some of these hazards can be minimized by wearing the proper clothing and having the right training so they avoid such things as collapsing walls. In addition, one very real risk is the wide range of toxic agents, both natural and man-made, released into the air, as flammable materials burn. One dangerous substance released in virtually all fires is carbon monoxide (CO), devices that prevent the inhalation of carbon monoxide have to be part of every firefighter's gear."
