From the Paper:

It has been pointed out by some that many of Shakespeare's plays have a certain cinematic sweep to them, moving from one scene to another in a rather cinematic way that is effective on the stage and that can be effective in a filmed version as well. The BBC productions of the Shakespeare Plays, including Julius Caesar and The Merchant of Venice, are caught in the middle of the issue, for they are not stage productions and they are not really films, either. Instead, they are a hybrid form, making use of certain stage traditions along with cinematic and television traditions to create a specific experience of the text. The directors of the two productions make similar choices in terms of settings and how transitions are handled, perhaps because of the requirements and limitations of the productions themselves rather then out of a specific choice on their part.
