Feminist Theory
A debate on the complexities of feminism.
1,125 words (approx. 4.5 pages) | 5 sources | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the difficulty of claiming women as the chief subject of feminism. It is supposed that feminism is about the liberation of women who currently live in a system dominated by men. The paper compares and contrasts the views of structuralists and deconstructivism.

From the Paper:

"It is often taken for granted that women are the chief subject of feminism. It is supposed that feminism is about the liberation of women, who currently live in a system dominated by men. However, feminist analysis itself has revealed the problems with this easy assumption. In particular, deconstructivism has been used to deconstruct the very concept of "women," and structuralists have demonstrated how the concept is socially and linguistically constructed. Thus, the key problem with claiming women as the subject of feminism is of course that it presupposes we know what "women" are - yet much feminist analysis directly challenges this notion."
