"Female Circumcision and International LawThis paper will discuss whether the practice if female circumcision violates human rights standards in international law. The first part of the paper will briefly describe the practice and the traditional justifications given for it continued use. The second part of the paper will examine the international rights standards which apply in these cases, especially the United Nations conventions and treaties. The third part of the paper will discuss the conflict between human rights standards and cultural traditions, explaining why universal human rights must be given more weight."
