"The Federal Reserve System (Fed) is the nation's central banking system, comprised of districts (with Federal Reserve Banks in each district). These banks loan money to other commercial institutions and, based on the interest rates charged to those institutions, determine the direction of the American monetary policy. The Fed is a complicated and intricate system that affects American consumers in nearly every aspect of their daily lives, from how much interest they pay on their mortgages and consumer loans, to the amount of interest they receive at their local savings institutions. This research examines the history of the Fed, its current strategies, and considers what the future may hold for this institution.
