"Exxon participates in a number of industries, all of them related, but this report focuses on the petroleum refining industry. The industry is characterized by large companies, many of them multinational corporations, nearly all of which engage in vertical integration so that they have a strong supply to retail tie-in. The industry is characterized by having large capital requirements, with exploration and extraction being among the most costly of the activities that industry participants engage in. In addition, there is considerable cost associated with transporting products in this industry, and the oil spill of Exxon's own Valdez tanker has led to increased scrutiny by international regulatory bodies regarding improvements in transportation systems designed to reduce the likelihood ... "
