In this article, the writer notes that evil can be classified as the act or active force that causes harm and suffering. The writer points out that, in western society, evil plays a prominent role in guiding the acts of people. The writer also looks at the effects of evil and its control on an individual by noting different events and literary works. The writer maintains that evil can affect not only an individual but society as well and can cause a chain of events influenced by its power. The writer concludes that the holocaust and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein are a few of the many examples of how evil can affect society and not just an individual.
From the Paper:
"Evil begins to corrupt an individual and leads to its effects on society. Through its power of deception, evil controls a person and leads him to conduct treacherous acts. The effects of evil and its control on an individual are evident in Robert Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Dr. Henry Jekyll drinks a potion of his design and transforms into another identity known as Edward Hyde, who represents the embodiment of pure evil and commits several evil acts for the pure sake of doing so. This manifestation of evil in Dr. Jekyll begins to consume him, thus, causing him to lose control over his transformations into the treacherous Mr. Hyde. William James states that "evil is a disease," and Mr. Hyde is a disease that causes Dr. Jekyll to lose his grasp of control."
