Every Drop For Sale
This paper discusses the water crisis.
1,850 words (approx. 7.4 pages) | 2 sources | MLA | 2002 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper looks at the problems of water shortage in the world, discussing how most people in the United States are unaware that a water shortage even exists. The author looks at the demand and supply of water and illustrates why in the not too distant future drinking water could be in shortage. Suggestions are given for better ways to manage water.

From the Paper:

"Since the very beginning of time, humans have always depended on water for survival. Left alone without any water for more than a few days meant certain death for early nomadic peoples. Most early civilizations sprung up around major rivers, such as with the Nile River in Egypt and the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in Mesopotamia. As humans became more advanced, we learned how to control water and use it to our advantage. As early as the Romans, stone structures were created to divert the natural course of water, and carry it to areas for crop irrigation. In addition, people created dams to block the flow of water, creating large lakes. For thousands of years, these common practices have been productive enough to provide suitable water for humans to accomplish their many tasks including cooking, drinking, and bathing. In today's world, the task of acquiring enough water to live on is not as easily accomplished as before. The world's population is increasing at a very fast pace, and with it increases the need for suitable drinking water. However, the water supply is constant, and with the help of pollution, there is even less suitable drinking water than there has been in the past. Simply put, the world is running out of drinking water. The lack of water has caused problems even here in the United States, yet not as severe as problems that have been occurring for years all around the globe. Scientists and even engineers are now focusing on past failures in water management, and must now look into the future for a solution to this problem, or they will face a horrible crisis in around 20 years."
