Ethnic Labels
An analysis of how ethnic labels have been used to achieve certain ends in the U.S.
678 words (approx. 2.7 pages) | 3 sources | APA | 2004 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper analyzes the construction of "black/white" ethnic labels in the U.S. and applies the analysis to contemporary relations between dominant social groups and Latinos, Chicanos, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, and Hispanics.

From the Paper:

"The construction of ethnic labels in the U.S. is typical of many other imperialist, capitalist power
throughout history. Ethnic labels were defined as a means of determining an ethnocentric superior in order to justify the treatment of those considered the ethnic inferior and other. As Joseph H. Healey maintains, theories of conflict and power maintain that prejudice derived from ethnic labels flows from competition between groups and then serves as a rationalization for exploitation and racial and ethnic stratification."
