"The ethics of the criminal justice system can be quite complex and often difficult for the layman to follow. The system is governed by a set of rules promulgated by the court system itself, by laws as passed by state or federal legislatures, by court decisions at higher levels and by the power of precedent to set a course and keep the system to it. Some cases that might seem simple become more complex as these various rules are applied and as different courts apply them. More than thirty years ago, a case came to light that brought issues of freedom of the press into sharp relief as the courts began to grapple with questions of when certain information could or could not be published."
