Ethical Learning

Paper Summary:

The paper examines how today's society seems to focus on factual learning. Learning grammatical rules, scientific and mathematical principles and society's orientation in history and geography is important. But, the paper contends that by focusing on factual education, the human side of learning often goes unheeded. The paper maintains that ethical learning should be as important in our children's lives as learning the three Rs, as it can provide a moral compass for the futures of our children and aid in character development.

"According to Wiberg (2006) "Ethical learning is learning of ways to reflect on values, habits and conduct already embedded in culture" (p. 6). Wiberg (2006) connects ethical learning with moral learning, which "represents a kind of being embedded in a culture [. . .] while ethical learning represents a deliberative and reflective activity [. . .]" (p. 6). These processes are inextricable from one another."
