Paper Summary:

This paper looks at the difficulty in determining what exactly are the values that can shape a person's life. It examines several theories of moral principles as set forth by ethicists such as M. Adler and K. Kitchener - principles such as prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance.

From the Paper:

"Ethics is the study of human actions to determine whether they are right or wrong (Adler, 1967, p. 13). Most ethicists consider right actions to be what should be done, and wrong actions are what should be avoided. Right actions bring happiness, while wrong actions lead to failure, destruction and despair. According to Adler, human beings have the free will to make choices that direct their voluntary behavior (1967, p. 15). He denies that we are victims of fate or destiny. Rather, we can choose our fate by choosing whether we will do good or evil, i.e., whether we will do right or wrong. However, he maintains that only by doing good, and consequently "right," will we be happy. And our happiness is realized by discovering and valuing life's underlying intellectual and moral virtues (Adler, p. 15)."
