2,540 words (approx. 10.2 pages) | 4 sources | MLA | 2005

Paper Summary:

This paper explains that, around the globe, countries are realizing the need for ethics in business by creating independent non-partisan, non-profit organizations to promote ethical practices their country, such as South Africa (EthicSA), Korea, (KBEI-Korean Business Ethics Institute) and Turkey (Turkish Ethical Values Center). The author points out that the composing of the code of ethics can follow different theories: The consequential theory--the right or wrong of the decision is measured by the consequence of the action taken, the rule-based theory--the action or decision is right or wrong only if it follows the written rule and the Aristotelian approach to business ethics--the intention of the actor and the character of the person involved. The paper stresses that international code of ethics should include topics about disabilities, AIDS, sexual harassment, romantic involvements, whistle blowing and corporate social responsibility.

From the Paper:

"Kohlberg's explains that cognitive moral development is how people come to the belief of what is right or wrong. As individuals grow up their moral development goes through phases in an irreversible order. People who are in the upper stages of development are concerned with broad justice and ethical principles. The stages start at the age of understanding with stage 1 and go up to fully developed stage 5. Most people do not develop beyond stage 3 or 4. People in the stage five are more likely to be able to see the big picture and make ethically correct choices. Ideally managers should be in this stage of cognitive development."
