In other words, who we are and what we experience as children at least partially dictates who we are and what we will do as adults. Erik Erikson's theory of development followed this point of view. Erikson realized that no adult springs forth fully formed like Athena from the head of Zeus. Rather Erikson hypothesized that each human being goes through distinct developmental stages and that each stage has its own unique crisis or obstacle to overcome. Individuals who successfully navigate the crisis will develop a corresponding ?ego strength.? Those who do not will be left with maladaptive or malignant tendencies.?
