This paper discusses the fact that the scientific revolution that started in the seventeenth century produced a major effect on human thought in many fields, including the political and social thought first of the seventeenth century and then of subsequent centuries. The paper discusses how these ideas would have an influence in the nineteenth century on both liberalism and socialism, though the degree of influence is arguable in both cases.

Both offer a predictive element that has a scientific basis. Liberalism is clearly a product of the Enlightenment and follows the beginnings of political science as elucidated by Locke and Hobbes, while socialism has a scientific element most evident in the particular socialist forms of Marx and Engels."
