The psychiatric history consists of the patient's life story told to the psychiatrist in his her own words along with all other relevant data from other sources, such as a parent or spouse. The paper shows that it is intended to give the psychiatrist an understanding of the patient's life both from the past and the likely future. The paper shows that the creation of such a history differs from that of medicine or surgery in that in addition to the collection of data regarding symptoms and chronology of medical and psychiatric problems, the psychiatrist attempts to get a picture of the patient's personality, their strengths, and weaknesses.From the Paper:
