Ecosystem Structure
A look at the intervention of humans in the ecosystem's structure.
890 words (approx. 3.6 pages) | 7 sources | MLA | 2002 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper examines how, while nature itself goes through the stages of destruction, creation or rejuvenation, currently, with the body of knowledge on the importance of ecological balance, ecological succession is often controlled by human intervention as well.

From the Paper:

"Prior to the presence of human intervention aimed at preserving existing, known ecosystems, natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions led to both the creation of new land and the destruction of existing land that was buried under voluminous amounts of lava. For example, since the onset of the eruption of the Kilauea Volcano on the island of Hawaii in January 1983, lave flows have added 570 acres of new land and paved over 40 square miles that included rare rainforest. The now continuous eruptions have resulted in atmospheric changes such as large amounts of noxious sulfur dioxide gas, creating volcanic smog and acid rain and earthquakes, all of which have impacted the ecosystem. This has led to the formation of the Olaa-Kilauea Project to develop programs that control alien species, restore rare populations of plants and ensure the survival of endangered plants, animals and insects (para 1, 12. Hawaii, USGS, n.d.) "
