If the subject of study is a critically endangered animal, such as the Vancouver Island Marmot, the nature of the study becomes even more precarious. Besides the obvious difficulty of observing a creature that is sparse in number, the needs of an endangered species will often clash with local economic and political interests regardless of the study's results.
