The methanol is typically derived from natural gas; isobutylene can be derived as a byproduct of the petroleum refinery process. Now that the EPA is considering either reducing the amount of MTBE that can be used in gasoline over a period of time, we need to ask the question why did the EPA permit the use of the chemical in the first place?"
