ECE in the U.S.

Paper Summary:

The paper explains the rise of ECE and how professionals within the field continue to claim its benefits across mass student groups. The paper looks at the origins of theoretical basis and relationship to U.S. federal and state policies, in connection to problems of under-privileged children and poverty. ECE facilities are also charged with the early detection of behavioural, developmental and learning problems towards what can be a very early pathologization of the student. The paper argues that, in short, ECE needs to be scrutinized, not presumed as always beneficial or the panacea to later problems in education.

"Early Childhood Education has swept North America as a set of practices that is assumed to be always good in hastening children's adjustment to education, ensuring experiences of social interaction with other children and adults, and instilling early literacy. This is discussed amply as offering a `head start' in relation to children that do not have opportunities for ECE. The rise of ECE has been said to be a development long overdue but towards a scenario that may yet come to be questioned. Despite all that is written in favour of ECE, it is sobering to remember that we still do not know its results, across varying student groups, in the long-term."
