Paper Summary:
This paper explains that e-learning studies show that the web has tremendous potential for assisting students not only in learning, but also in acquiring new skills to use in their learning. The paper points out that the main philosophical objective in integrating web-based e-learning techniques into curricula is to help the student achieve a deep-level learning experience as opposed to surface-level learning. The author refers to the "Bloom's Taxonomy", which places the focus on a hierarchy of understanding by highlighting the student's demonstration of the following: Knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.
From the Paper:
"This e-learning research project was carried out using over 1,500 students and 75 staff members from 14 history departments across the UK; Design, English, Health and Religious Studies departments were also part of the study. The project evaluated twelve history "tutorials" given to students (phase one), and also involved the development of Web sites specific to the learning modules (phase two). In the Web sites, there were to be found helpdesks, course news items, bulletin boards, and other support materials. The project's intentions were to create a "holistic learning experience" through the promotion of ?co-operation, engagement and involvement.? Why was this particular e-learning process created? According to Dr. Hall's report, ?Conventional approaches to teaching and learning do not meet all of the needs and aspirations of an increasingly diverse group of students.? "
