Drugs and Crime

Paper Summary:

This paper looks at the close relationship between drugs and crime in the case of three modern illegal or ill-used substances and the cultures that surround them: crack cocaine, OxyContin, and methamphetamine. After each case is studied and discussed, a comparative analysis is made of the three situations, making a judgment on how each is harmful to society and which one is possibly the most socially harmful, overall.

"When one watches the early film, Reefer Madness, the view of how drug use breeds crime is almost comical, as a puff of cannabis is shown to supposedly lead to violence, criminal sprees, and ultimately, severe mental illness and psychopathic behavior. This partially informed belief carried on through the 1960s, as society viewed acid-laced and grass-smoking hippies as a threat normality, safety, and peace. It was not until the Reagan presidency, when beloved Ronald and his prolific wife, Nancy, enacted their famous "War on Drugs" that the United States truly made an official link between drugs and crime and put forth a concerted effort to put an end to both. While history shows that links between drugs and crime are often not very accurate, at least in the links that are chosen, drugs and crime do often meet, do often spur each other on, do often come hand-in-hand."
