The paper describes how the modern Shakespearean theater offers similar minimalist design in staging, but can be distracting. This is due to the fact that many of the 19th and 18th century European and early American theaters bring forth staging in lavish and complicated set designs. The paper considers, however, that by analyzing modern set designs, the aspects of acting and textual oration are lost in the abstraction that modernity brings in set design. The paper explains that this can be problematic in evoking Shakespeare's quality scriptural dominance in early theater.

"This study will seek to examine the nature of historical and modern staging that can be compared within the play: "Othello" by William Shakespeare. By observing the earliest 17th century staging of this play, one can realize the gradations of sets, actor positioning on the stage and the various other special effects, which are now used within modern Shakespearean productions. The earliest performances of Shakespeare's "Othello" reflect the lack of stage sets, which can now characterize the more symbolic and interactive stages of the 18th and 19th centuries."
