Domestic Violence

Paper Summary:

In this paper the author examines if the laws for domestic violence are tough enough in America. The author looks at the laws that have been passed and examines if they are carried through and if there is documentation to support this. The paper takes the State of Illinois as an example where the laws are tougher and there are enough helpful tools in place to follow through the laws. For example the author talks about the special database which has been set up to keep track of offenders. Along with this he tells us, Illinois have constituted a program to notify other jurisdictions should an offender leave theirs and take up residence in another place to hide the fact they were offenders. The paper continues to discuss the ways in which the laws can be improved. The author concludes that other states should learn from Illinois in order to improve their laws and actions against domestic violence.

"However what does all this Federal Government double talk and Gobble-de-gook really mean? Let's examine the State of Illinois to see just where they stand. First, the Legislature of Illinois took the proper action of assigning all criminal acts from Criminal Sexual Harassment, Stalking, Date Rape or even the attempt thereat, Spousal Abuse both physical and verbal, and all the other such acts and placed them in the Domestic Violence Act. This gives the Officer in the Street a tool to use to prosecute offenders whether or not charges are preferred by the victim. A quite laudable Act and one many other States are following, for example, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Iowa along with Wisconsin."
