Just ten years ago in 1994, the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics did not include the term "domestic violence" in over 700 pages of evaluation and statistics (Davis 1). Even the most seasoned law enforcement professional will acknowledge that the criminal justice system cannot prevent or anticipate all domestic violence cases. However, good training can allow the officer to recognize patterns and issues in relationships that can point to domestic violence, and ultimately, it can help save lives, as domestic violence is still a leading cause of death in disputes and in officers responding to calls."
