The writer discusses what the role of a police officer should be in domestic violence situations and the level of training police officers should receive to better prepare them for domestic violence calls. It also discusses signs of strangulation, what police officers should look out for, and the lack of training in this area.
From the Paper:
"Part of the problem with training is that even today, many law enforcement agencies still do not recognize domestic violence as a legitimate concern, or even a statistic worthy of study. Just ten years ago in 1994, the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics did not include the term "domestic violence" in over 700 pages of evaluation and statistics (Davis 1). Even the most seasoned law enforcement professional will acknowledge that the criminal justice system cannot prevent or anticipate all domestic violence cases. However, good training can allow the officer to recognize patterns and issues in relationships that can point to domestic violence, and ultimately, it can help save lives, as domestic violence is still a leading cause of death in disputes and in officers responding to calls."
