↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

This paper examines several sociological theories and their relevance to the field of nursing. The writer spends time explaining three significant sociological theories, as well as how those theories impact the ability of a nurse to screen for victims of domestic violence. The writer explores each theory with a focus on domestic violence and its difficulty in the screening process.

From the Paper:

"The field of nursing is heavily dependent on sociological theories for its basic structure and foundation. Nurses encounter a wide spectrum of situations and patients as they make their way through their daily duties. Years of evolvement and experience have created a field in which nurses are expected to anticipate and understand many unspoken things. Nurses are expected to know when a patient is not being completely upfront or forthcoming in regards to the symptoms. Nurses are sometimes suspicious of a patient's symptoms, whether those symptoms are physical or merely emotional hints that something is going on. A nurse is often expected to read between the lines and ask the proper questions to draw the truth out of the patients(Allen, 1995). Emergency room nurses have one of the most difficult jobs when it comes to this because they are often meeting a patient for the very first time and under less than ideal circumstances. When the nurse suspects the patient has been involved in a domestic abuse situation it can be critical to handle the assessment correctly. Social theories often create atmospheres in which people react in ways that are unexpected. Within each theory there are strengths and weaknesses that can be contrasted against each other. There are three theories that can be applied to the instance of effective screening for domestic violence in the emergency room."
