In the 1970s it was a combination of films from Australia and films from West Germany, the latter led by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. More recently, Spain has become a contributor to the screens of the world, with the leading filmmaker of the time being Pedro Almodovar, in some ways an unlikely leader given his penchant for bizarre sexual themes, iconoclastic attitudes, and searing satiric humor."
